Typed document to Hermann Freiherr Kövess von Kövessháza was the final, and completely ceremonial, Commander-in-Chief of Austria-Hungary. He served as a generally competent and unremarkable commander in the Austro-Hungarian Army and was close to retirement in 1914 when The First World War broke out and he was given a command post. Documented is typed and signed, “Karl” (Kaiser) Lieber Generaloberst von Kovess. ICH ernenne Sie lieber Generaloberst in dankbarer Anerkennung Lhrer wahrend der ganen Dauer des Krieges und suf verschiedenen kriegschauplatzen bewahrten hervorragenden und erfolgreichen fuhrertatigkeit zum feldmarchall. Standort, am 5. August 1917. Signed “Karl”. Translation:Dear Colonel General of Kovess. I appoint you prefer to Colonel General in grateful recognition of your Duriong the entire duration of the war and at various theatres of war proven excellent and successful leaders activity to field marshal. Location on 5 August 1917.
